International Primary Curriculum

The International Primary Curriculum (IPC) is part of the international curricula that Heritage International School incorporates. This curriculum seeks to develop learners holistically by providing an enjoyable experience in academic, personal, and international learning as well as allowing students to see God’s hand across the universe, assessing the world around them from a biblical worldview and making judgments for the future that are honoring God.

The IPC aims to develop a sense of ‘international mindedness’ and ‘global competency’ which encourages learners to take action in the local and global community.

The IPC is taught through thematic units of learning that have international tasks where learning relevant to the theme is considered locally and globally, often through host, home, and adopted countries. Thinking about these countries may also be included in subject tasks to allow learners to make connections between subject learning and home and/or host countries.

An ’Entry Point’ that acts as a ‘hook,’ comes at the start of each theme and could involve a field trip or a creative hands-on experience prepared by the teacher. This enables the children to not only enjoy their learning experience but retain the content taught as well. The learners through researching and recording their activities have an opportunity to demonstrate, share and explain their learning in different ways. The unit ends with an Exit Point that helps the students pull together their learning from the unit and celebrate all they have learned.

IPC improves learning by teaching the children to make connections between subjects and their own lives. IPC also creates global competence and social consciousness as well as enables learners to be future-ready and motivated to contribute to both a local and global context.

IPC also facilitates the learning of knowledge, skills, and understanding that are reflective of a range of standards from all over the world and help students develop personal skills that enable them to take an active part in the world, develop an international mindset in conjunction with an awareness of their own nationality.

Science, Social Studies, Art, ICT, Music, and PE are covered in IPC through units of work that are structured in such a way that each theme is studied through the different subjects which let children see how knowledge and understanding can be enhanced through a multi-disciplinary approach. All the activities are linked to specific subject, personal, and international learning goals on which the IPC has been developed.
