Singapore Mathematics

Heritage uses the Singapore Math Curriculum through which their understanding of God’s orderly nature and character is developed. The method used in Singapore Math is a highly effective teaching approach that has been widely adopted in various forms all over the world.

It was originally developed in Singapore to teach students to learn and master fewer mathematical concepts in greater detail as well as having them learn these concepts using a three-step learning process: Concrete, Pictoral, and Abstract.

Students are steered away from the traditional rote learning and trained to think mathematically and rely on the depth of knowledge gained in previous lessons. Problem-solving techniques are polished while teaching students to think critically which is an essential tool for children of the 21st century. Students are taught to think mathematically as opposed to reciting formulas that may have no meaning to them. They develop mental strategies that enable them to solve mathematical problems.

The staff at Heritage find Singapore math to be very clear, deeply logical, and sequential with a strong focus on students’ mental math skills. Their thinking skills are developed through the challenging word problems presented allowing the students to use their math skills in various situations.

The curriculum consists of a textbook, workbooks, and a teacher’s guide. While the textbook presents new concepts, the workbooks give students the opportunity to practice the concepts taught.

Our school’s adoption of Singapore Mathematics has allowed us to rank at the top in international math testing as evidenced by our annual IOWA Assessment math results.
